Before & Aftercare

Beforecare Instructions

To get the best results and ensure proper pigment retention, please follow these guidelines before your SMP session:

7 Days Before Your Appointment

Avoid sun exposure and tanning (including tanning beds). Sunburned or irritated skin cannot be treated.

Stop using chemical exfoliants or harsh scalp treatments (retinoids, acids, medicated shampoos unless prescribed).

Avoid cosmetic scalp products like hair fibers, sprays, or concealers if possible.

3–5 Days Before

Do not shave your scalp unless instructed by your artist.

Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs. These thin the blood and can affect pigment retention.

Reduce caffeine intake if you’re sensitive—it can increase bleeding.

48 Hours Before

Do not take blood-thinning medications or supplements unless prescribed by a doctor.
This includes aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and omega-3s.

Avoid intense workouts or activities that cause heavy sweating.

Do not get a scalp treatment, or facial that affects the scalp.

24 Hours Before

Wash your scalp thoroughly with a gentle shampoo.

Do not apply lotions, oils, sunscreen, or styling products to the scalp.

Stay well hydrated and get a good night’s sleep.

Day of Your Appointment

Arrive with a clean, dry scalp.

Wear comfortable clothing, preferably something dark and easy to remove.

Eat a light meal beforehand to keep your blood sugar stable.

Bring a hat or hood for after the session (clean loose-fitting only).

Important Notes

If you have skin conditions (psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis), active acne, or medical conditions, inform your practitioner before your appointment.

If you’ve recently had hair transplant surgery, SMP should only be done after proper healing (usually 6–12 months).

Aftercare Instructions

Proper aftercare is essential for healing, pigment retention, and long-term results. Please follow these instructions carefully.

First 4 Days After Each Session

Do not wash or wet the scalp

Do not sweat (avoid workouts, saunas, steam rooms)

Do not expose the scalp to sun or tanning beds

Do not apply any products (lotions, oils, sunscreen, hair fibers)

Do not shave the scalp

Do not touch, scratch, or pick the treated area

General Care

Wear a loose-fitting hat or hood only if necessary

Sleep on clean bedding

Mild redness is normal and will subside within 24–48 hours

Days 5–10 After Each Session

You may gently wash the scalp with a mild, fragrance-free shampoo

Resume light exercise, avoiding excessive sweating

Moisturize lightly if dryness occurs (only if approved by your artist)

Continue to avoid prolonged sun exposure

Do not shave until day 7, and then only with an electric shaver (no razor)

Between Sessions

Follow the same aftercare after every session

Avoid chemical scalp treatments, exfoliation, or harsh products

Protect your scalp from sun exposure as much as possible

Long-Term Aftercare (After All Sessions Are Complete)

Once your final session has fully healed (typically after 10–14 days), long-term care becomes key to preserving your results.

Sun Protection

Sun exposure is the #1 cause of fading

Wear a hat or apply SPF 30+ sunscreen whenever the scalp is exposed

Avoid tanning beds entirely

Skincare & Grooming

Keep the scalp clean and moisturized

Use gentle, non-exfoliating shampoos

Avoid aggressive scrubs, chemical peels, or laser treatments on the scalp

Shave gently—avoid razor burn and irritation

Lifestyle Considerations

Excessive sweating, frequent swimming, and prolonged sun exposure may cause faster fading

Chlorine and saltwater can dull pigment over time—rinse the scalp after swimming

Touch-Ups

Scalp Micropigmentation is a low-maintenance but not permanent treatment

Most clients benefit from a touch-up every 3–5 years, depending on skin type and lifestyle
